Chris Siervey, the creator of the cult 80’s TV character Frank Sidebottom, has sadly collapsed and died at his home in Hale.
The comic had been recovering well after surgery to remove a tumour from his chest but died unexpectedly yesterday.
In a mark of commemoration a number of Facebook fans have started a campaign to get the much loved Sidebottom to the number one spot with his spoof World Cup Song, Three Shirts on The Line.
The proceeds of the record will go to Cancer Relief.
One of the group creators paid tribute to Siervey saying, “A lot of comedians get quite famous and leave Manchester, but Chris stuck around. I think most people in Manchester had some connection to him.
“The World Cup single might give everyone a bit of cheer in what has been a pretty miserable campaign so far.
“Unfortunately it does not seem to exist on iTunes – we need to get onto them so that people can buy it and make some money for charity.”
A similar online campaign was waged last year in challenge to X Factor’s monopoly of the Christmas number one, and centred around the chart battle between RATM and Joe McElderry.
Followers of the group will hope the venture gains as much publicity as that famous affair to get Sidebottom’s song to number one for a fitting of tribute to the iconic figure.
