Sir Ridley Scott has announced one of his most ambitious projects to date, to produce the film Life in a Day which aims to document a day in the life of the entire planet.
The Hollywood director has started work on the experimental film and has invited people from across the world to record a snapshot of their own lives on a single day in July.
The documentary will incorporate footage shot on July 24th that is submitted by YouTube users from around the world. It will have its star spangled world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
Gladiator director Scott commented on the new endeavour saying: “With this project we’re asking you to get up, with your cameras, and actually record your day, whatever it is. Maybe record something about your cat. But it must be personal. That’s what we’re looking for.â€
Sir Ridley believes the film marks a return to his origins saying: “My first film was a day in my life,” he said. “I thought, ‘I’ll just write a day in the life of me and how I once decided not to go to school – because I hated school – and I took the day off'”.
Kevin Macdonald will direct the film having worked on the likes of State of Play and The Last King of Scotland, he will compile and cut the best footage into the final movie.
Individuals whose footage makes it into the finished film will be credited as co-directors, and twenty of the lucky participants will be flown to Sundance for the movie’s debut.
MacDonald said: “‘Life in a Day’ is a time capsule that will tell future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010.â€
“I hope it will be something that will open people’s eyes to the possibilities of user-generated film.
“Of course, it’s a risk. It could be that I won’t get anything interesting back. But I don’t think that will be the case. I’m sure there will be some real gems, some real magic, which is what I’m looking for.”
