John Butler Trio, the antipodean funksters of the earth, are back with an album that will have you dancing like you’re possessed as much as it renders you into quiet contemplation of the world we live in.
April Uprising begins unusually in the sense that the first track Revolution is very serious and starts very quietly, building to a vibrant and catchy chorus. It’s the kind of track you’d expect to find around seventh onwards on a track listing.
In the case of April Uprising however, this is actually a good thing as it seems to set the tone for the rest of the album – have fun but also listen because we really do have something to say here.
With table-tapping tracks like One Way Road, C’Mon Now, Don’t Wanna See Your Face and the stomping Close To You, April Uprising has moments that bring to mind a breadth of artists; from the acoustic surf-guru Jack Johnson, to early Red Hot Chili Peppers, Incubus and Billy Holiday’s We Didn’t Start The Fire.
Other tracks including Take Me, Fool For You and the powerful To Look Like You showcase the emotive and organic sound that John butler Trio do so exceptionally well.
Delving in and out of funk, blues, orchestral, folk and reggae along with their own individual sound, this is an encouraging direction for John Butler Trio.
April Uprising, more so than previous works offers a greater variety of themes and styles that are both personal and political and seems to bring their music into the mainstream without compromising its integrity.

“It’s interesting to see a band come together and the first thing they do is create and produce together. We came in as three producers, three writers, three players. We went into the laboratory to produce the best thing we could and here we are. What an interesting way to start a relationship. Personally I feel we’ve created something very special that will stand the test of time – it’s my best work to date”
