As the folk renaissance gathers steam, children of the sun who’s music was otherwise too shy to be heard in the urban wilderness are finding their place on our airwaves once again.
One such folkster is the increasingly popular Alessi’s Ark who’s new EP Soul Proprietor is due out April 5th.
With sweeping cymbals, shimmering acoustic guitars, gentle string bends and slides from the electric guitar, the four track EP has a wonderfully organic texture, bringing the feeling of sunshine into your room – perfect if you’ve been stuck in the office all day knowing full well how glorious it is outside.
Like that great teacher we all remember or perhaps are yet to encounter, the breathy vocals don’t force you to listen, but instead invite you to engage with interesting and poetic thoughts.
Opening with The Bird Song Master which totes whistles aplenty and delicate background harmonies, the listener is then taken into Shovelling, a track which sounds like it would fittingly accompany ‘the resolution moment’ in a quirky independent film.
The EP then takes an upbeat tack into the toe-tapping/head bobbing The Robot and finishes with the emotive Dancing Feet, which seems to travel through time with resonating drums straight from some mist saturated celtic field.
Soul Proprietor is a diverse and enchanting example from such a young artist and shows great potential. If you’re a folk fan or simply looking for something relaxing to accompany that sunday afternoon then it’s worth a listen.
