Everything in Between is the new album from American duo No Age and it is a record that flatters to deceive.
Having emerged from their former band Wives in 2005, the duo have become the torch bearers of the DIY art punk scene in LA.
Since the release of Weirdo Rippers, their 2007 debut album (on FatCat records), and the bands follow up EP Nouns on Sub Pop, No Age have amassed them an enviable following, which includes Radiohead‘s Colin Greenwood.
No Age have risen out of the sweaty basement shows and art galleries and Everything in Between is a bold statement if nothing else. This is personified in the opening tracks Life Prowler and Glitter.
Glitter in particular with its visceral, jarring guitars has the scope of an early Placebo recording and really drives the record.
The American upstarts never lose touch with their lo-fi DIY ethos through out the album and the stand out track Depletion marries melancholy chord progressions with a moving vocal reminiscent of The Crimea’s best work.
But it all goes a bit pear shaped after that, the album’s force dissipates with ever song from the Common Heat onwards, Skinned is out of synch with the whole atmosphere of the piece and Shed and Transcend offers no further inspiration. Katerpillar is worth a listen though with it’s gentle chimes, sparse instrumentation and sea-fever feel.
