The Libertines started over last night playing their first gig in six years at The Forum in North London.
The Likely Lads split in 2004 over Pete Doherty’s drug abuse and uncontrollable behaviour, which came to a head when he was charged for burgling Barat’s flat.
It was like the foursome had never been away taking to the stage in front of an elated crowd that included old friend Amy Winehouse.
Winehouse was apparently booed as she took her place in the VIP area while there was only joy and wild applause directed towards the band on stage.
The old chemistry and camaraderie between frontmen Carl Barat and Doherty was there for all to see as they shared the same microphone, crooning their way through hits that included Can’t Stand Me Now, Don’t Look Back Into The Sun and Boys In The Band.
The gig ended with all four band members embracing at the front of the stage raising the hope that the reunion will go far beyond the scheduled festival dates.
Barat himself was hopeful of a new album saying: “You never know. Of course, we’ve got that vessel, The Libertines, and of course we want to do other things, but it’s a funny old business. Yeah, but ideally I’d love to record something. We’ll just see how it goes.”
The Libertines are set to steal the show this August bank holiday performing at Reading and Leeds festivals.
